Soutos de Celas

Among the ancient chestnut trees of Celas

Soutos de Celas

A walk through what are probably the oldest hazelnut groves on the western side of the Serra da Nogueira, between the villages of Celas, Negreda and Mós de Celas. The route passes by the Tower of Celas, the Chapel of St Peter and the Tile Kiln, offering views over the surrounding mountains. A natural complement to the waterfall route.

A complement to the Cachão da Malhadinha route, especially for those starting in Negreda. Celas lies on the western side of the Serra da Nogueira; its attraction is the Torre de Celas, a fortified settlement on a quartzite knoll (not included in the layout, to preserve the loop, but with information to be made available). Anti-clockwise, from the square by the Igreja Matriz de Celas, it heads north straight into chestnut groves, likely among the oldest in the area, judging by the size of the trees. It circles the foot of the Torre de Celas to the Chapel of S. Pedro and, about 200 m on, the Forno de Telha (disused but preserved), a relic of artisanal tile and brick making. Negreda is next, through chestnut groves with views over the Serra da Nogueira and the neighbouring villages; the return heads south, crossing almost unbroken chestnut groves via Mós de Celas to Celas.
