The Municipality of Vinhais has simultaneously developed its Network of Walking Trails and the Vinhais Cycling Centre, as part of a project comprising 42 routes and approximately 1,700 kilometres of signposted trails and roads, covering all the parishes in the municipality. The initiative places Vinhais at the forefront of active tourism in Portugal, with particular significance for the inland regions.
The area is characterised by its proximity to the Montesinho Natural Park, which covers almost half the municipality’s area, providing habitats for Iberian wolves and golden eagles, as well as oak and chestnut woodlands. The crystal-clear rivers, black-stone villages and ancestral traditions such as the Ousilhão Masks, ‘Death and the Devils’, or the ‘Goat and the Left-Hander’ Festival, form the backdrop to a range of trails stretching from the heart of the park to the hills and valleys of the southern part of the municipality.
The local cuisine reinforces the destination’s identity: the Vinhais smoked ham, with Protected Geographical Indication status, and the chestnuts from the groves scattered throughout the area are national landmarks. Each route has been designed according to criteria of character and authenticity, selecting attractions with genuine distinction and the potential to be promoted as prime tourist destinations. The walking network comprises 22 circular routes, 15 of which are entirely new, totalling 255 kilometres of trails.
